It’s no secret that both Andy Jenkins and Mike Filsaime are superstars in the Internet marketing arena (possibly most famous for their Stompernet launch in 2006), and it’s always good to learn from the best. As this is written, this dynamic duo has just released video #2 of a four part series for their latest wiz bang product, Video Genesis. Perhaps one reason they’ve experience such success, is they know how to resonate with those of us who need a little help, but still want to do a great job. And it doesn’t get any easier than grabbing your iPhone and diving into video production right? Wrong!
Before I go any further, let me set the stage; we’re not talking about a quick video of your dog or cat playing with their favorite toy, we’re discussing a professional produced video from start to finish, but keeping costs to a minimum. There won’t be any out-of-focus video, poor sound or distracting background, this is first class all the way, but accomplishing that on a budget.
The iPhone is a marvel of modern technology and the latest models can shoot in HD (high definition) delivering superior quality to any scenario. That said, if the lighting is bad, the sound poor, the background clutter and the message unclear, it’s not going to turn out to be a great video. But it doesn’t have to be that way; producing a video on an iPhone (using the tips and tricks that Andy Jenkins) can rival the best of the best.
How is that possible? Read on my friend, this might not put Hollywood out of business, but it can make you a shining star on YouTube and help you sell the latest widget.
Video #2, which you can see by clicking this link, was produced (just so we’d know it was possible) completely on an iPhone, and let me tell you, it rocks. These guys have integrated comedy; sci-fi (hot tub time machines and Deloreans) as well as a cameo from Frank Kern (another Internet hot shot) all designed to capture your attention, while also passing along some excellent information. That makes sense, since if they used a Hollywood crew to make the video, they’d be cheating, but they didn’t, they used exactly what they are recommending you use, then showing you how to do it, and do it on a budget.
We’re going to assume that you (or a friend) have an iPhone, but even if you don’t, much of what these guys teach is quality information that can be utilized on any type of video production from an iPhone to the latest and greatest digital camera.
To get the full effect, definitely watch the video, but here’s an overview just so you’ll know where things are headed. And remember, this isn’t going to cost you a lot of money, but it will allow others to believe you spent a bundle on equipment (but you didn’t).
1. iPhone (we already mentioned that).
2. Tripod: It is crucial that your shot be steady and not floating around, you need to concentrate on what you want your audience to see, which leads me to…
3. You’ll want to frame each shot (or most of them) as a medium shot (don’t worry you can zoom in during editing if needed). A medium shot is basically from the head down to about three buttons on the shirt. This allows whoever is talking to powerfully convey their message.
4. Sound: It is crucial that you have quality sound and that is not going to happen with the normal sound recording on a iPhone, they weren’t designed with that in mind. Not to worry, this is explained in detail in the video, you’ll be using a lavalier mike (also known as a lapel mike) and using a special adapter (they tell you where to get it) that takes that quality sound and allows it to be integrated directly into your iPhone.
5. Seamless background: Depending on the mood you want to create, having a distracting background while you are trying to retain the attention of the viewer is often a wasted effort. Again, not to worry, since this can easily be readied by purchasing inexpensive seamless background paper (available in a multitude of colors) to keep the shot centered on the actor (or product) without spending much money at all Seamless can likely be bought locally, if not there are countless vendors who will ship it right to your door.
6. Lighting: Andy stresses the need to have quality, but inexpensive and cool (low temperature) lights to create your video. This doesn’t mean you need a big budget or expensive cinematographer; simply visit eBay to find an a wide assortment of lights (Andy recommends LCD soft-boxes) that can quickly and easily make everyone watching think you have a film school background.

Andy Jenkins is a well known and successful figure in the Internet Marketing community, in which he’s considered a “guru” of sorts when it comes to video marketing, search engine optimization and other Internet marketing disciplines.
Jenkins learned much of his video marketing fundamentals in his college years when he attended NYU as a film student. He’s credited with having done professional video editing for a few major motion pictures prior to his ascent in online business.
